Quick Questions for Spokeswoman Suzanne Rhodes
Q. What does MMA do? A. Mercy Medical Airlift provides free [and discounted] medical air transportation to patients with financial need ... and deep discounted ticket programs for needy persons traveling for compassion and bereavement purposes.
Q. What's one of your most memorable cases? A. During a routine examination, Christine learned that her unborn twins suffered from a rare condition called twin-twin transfusion syndrome. The disorder is the result of the transfusion of blood from one fetal twin to the other. The donor twin becomes stuck, due to lack of fluid in the uterine environment, while the recipient twin floats around in excessive fluid.
The next day Christine successfully underwent a treatment, but she and her husband Dan faced the problem of getting to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia the day after Christmas so a specialist could evaluate for special surgery. Through an Internet search they learned of Mercy Medical Airlift. Dan called, and within a day or two, all necessary paperwork and arrangements were made and the couple had a flight.
Abigail and Madeline were born on April 6 at 34 weeks' gestation.
