HISTORY In 2003, beloved family physician James Hubbard, M.D., M.P.H., (pictured above) made a sweeping career change. He launched Family Doctor magazine as an in-depth, fascinating extension of the office visit—a venue for readers to connect to health-care providers in a new way. The magazine was enthusiastically embraced by doctors and the general public alike. In 2009, Dr. Hubbard ceased publication of the print version and now focuses his education efforts digitally, with articles, his blog and a free newsletter.
ABOUT DR. HUBBARD A family practitioner for over 25 years, James Hubbard, M.D., M.P.H., knows the medical world inside and out. He created some of the most successful family practices in Mississippi. And in 2003, frustrated by managed care and the lack of time doctors were able to spend educating patients, Dr. Hubbard made a radical career change, launching what he then called Family Doctor: The Magazine That Makes Housecalls, a national magazine written by health-care practitioners for the general public.
In 2009, Dr. Hubbard shuttered the print magazine to focus his education efforts digitally, with a Web site, blog and free newsletter. He remains on the front lines of health care—seeing patients part-time. “My goal is to give people the information they need to make informed decisions about their health," Dr. Hubbard says, "so they can live healthier, more fulfilled lives.” Educational Background Dr. Hubbard graduated from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine in the top of his class. A member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society (for the nation's top medical students), he was then chosen for the highly acclaimed Parkland Memorial Hospital internship in Dallas, where he trained in internal medicine.
Dr. Hubbard went on to establish two of the most successful medical practices in North Mississippi. He has earned a Master of Public Health, is board certified in occupational medicine and is a fellow in the American Academy of Family Physicians.
